Chapter 3: A new home

I don't remember when we arrived at the asylum…I think I fell asleep on the way there, so I don't know how long the drive was…All I knew was that I didn't want to be here…

That morning when I woke up I was in a new bed, Patches was gone and I wasn't alone. A girl about my age was sitting in a corner looking at the wall. Slowly I got up and out of bed, putting my feet on the wooden. "H-hello?" I reached my hand out, trying to make her notice me before I stopped, on my wrist was bracelet, almost like a hospital bracelet that had my name and birthday on it…Great…

The girl still didn't respond, she seemed to have been lost in her own world, playing in the grass, or perhaps running with the family she once had. "Oh good, your awake" I jumped at the voice and looked up at the door, there was a slot in the doors for the nurse's to pear into the room. She stepped back and opened the door and smiled kindly at us

"Abby" The nurse said softly. The young girl, named Abby, turned her head silently, she had bags under her eyes, giving me the hint that she hardly slept. "Would you like to say hi to your room mate?" The nurse asked softly. Abby's eyes traveled slowly over to me, looked me up and down then turned back to the wall, never saying a word.

Feeling hurt I looked down, suddenly noticing that both my shoes and clothes have been removed, My clothes were now what looked like a hospital gown, I bit my lip. "Don't worry sweetie, everything will be fine in time" she said softly before smiling, "My name is Mrs. Avali" she said softly, she knelled down to my height, what's your name sweetheart?" she asked gently. "Johanna…and I don't…belong here" I chocked out, I could feel my eyes starting to get wet. "It's alright sweetheart, we are here to help" She stood straight and smiled again, she had such a kind smile "It's time to for one on one sweetie" she spoke softly and put a comforting hand on my shoulder, I didn't look at her as she guided me to a big wooden door, there she knocked three times before a voice responded for us to come in. "Hello Miss. Gale" Mrs. Avali greeted. "Hello, Why is this little Johanna?" the owner smiled and stood up. "Welcome to Miss. Gale's Home for children" she walked towards me but I continued to stare at her feet, she was wearing some nice shoes though. I knew were I was, I was at an asylum. "Please, sit" she motioned to a chair before going back to her desk, I moved silently and without looking up after and sat down in a rather comfortable chair. Once she sat down she looked up at the nurse she nodded and the nurse left the room, closing the door behind her.

"Miss. Johanna, why don't you tell me about yourself?" she asked me, pulling out a note pad. I stayed silent, I would just be digging myself another hole if I spoke, so instead, I looked around the room, my eyes fell on a photo of her, a handsome man and a baby girl" Mrs. Gale must've followed my gaze cause I heard the legs of the chair scrape against the hard wood floor as she got up. "Beautiful picture huh?" she asked softly. "That's my family, The man's named is Josh, and the little one there is Emily, she's turning one next month" she smiled and leaned against the table. "Do you have any siblings?" she asked crossing her arms.

I looked away again, biting my lip. "Look sweetie, I know your frightened, but everything will be---" I began to block her out when I noticed a young girl laughing at me. She realized I noticed her and stopped laughing before she walked up to me and started laughing at me again, right in my face. "What are you laughing at?!" I snapped angrily. "You have no right to laugh at me!" I glared at her, I felt my face getting red. "Why? Your cooped up in this stupid place, while I can go anywhere I want" the girl laughed. "Ha! I will get out of this place before you can say Tootie Fruity!" I snapped at her. Her lips pulled into a challenging smile and spoke slowly. 'Tootie…..Fruity…" Before looking around and smirked. "Well, your still here!" she ran off laughing. "Come back here!" I screamed jumping out of my seat and going over to were she disappeared. "Get back here!" I yelled again before freezing, the blood ran out of my face as I turned around to look over at Mrs. Gale, she had snuck back to her desk and was writing stuff down. Great….

Later that day I was returned to my room until lunch time, after that little mishap, I had refused to say anything else, just glare at the floor. Eventually Mrs. Gale got frustrated and called Mrs. Avali to bring me back to my room. Abby was still on the floor, but this time, playing with something. Silently I snuck forward and peeked over her shoulder, She was playing with a bear.

"Hey, you have a bear too!" I said happily, thinking maybe we could be friends. Abby gasped and scurried over to her corner like a frightened mouse, "Easy…Easy" I quickly backed away, She seemed to have a lot of trusting issues. For the rest of the day until lunch I looked out the window.

"Okay girls, time to eat" Mrs. Avali came in and smiled at us. "Oh, and here" The nurse pulled a bag out and handed me Patched. "Patches!" I gasped and grabbed him and hugged him tightly

I pulled him back to look at him at arms length then frowned, the buttons have been pulled out of his eye sockets…how morbid…."Sorry, it had to have a little surgery, we are very careful with our patients here" Mrs. Avali said softly. "Now come on, I hear they're making Macaroni and cheese in the cafeteria today" she said softly and held out her hand, Abby ran to it quickly and took her hand then looked back at me, silently telling me it's alright, I walked forward and walked with them to the cafeteria

"This is the cafeteria" She pushed the double wide doors open, inside was all girls, different size's, different colors, all wearing hospital gown's, bracelets and no shoes. The nurse showed me to another table were Abby and I sat down quietly with another pair of girls. One was tinny, she was eyeballing her food, looking terrified to eat. "it's alright Emma, it's just food, your not going to get sick if you eat" Mrs. Avali spoke kindly to the girl. I eyed the girl silently before looking down at my own food, It did look good, I picked up my silver wear then frowned, "A spoon?" I looked at Mrs. Avali. "Yes, you are not permitted to have forks" she said softly watching Emma lift a quivering tinny hand to her moth to eat the food.

By the end of lunch I got to know the two girls, the other one was Alexis, who, by my guesses, had D.I.D or Dissociative identity disorder she switched several times during lunch time and had my head spinning, she went from personality to personality quickly, and at one point she must've come back cause she was yelling and screaming at someone named 'Molly' and 'Jenna' two young men had to come and take her away before lunch was over.

After lunch, we had therapy, Alexis was there again, she looked mellow, not there at all. I took my seat next to the therapist. "Welcome dear, My name is Angel, just Angel" she said softly. The girls spoke in Unison. "Hello Angel" Angel smiled and looked over at me. 'We have a new girl here today, do you want to tell us about yourself?" She asked. I looked away. "Not really…?" she whispered. "Alright, you don't have to just yet" she patted my shoulder and looked at the other girls. 'Who wants to go first?" she asked softly. Alexi's hand shot up. "Alright Alexis, go ahead, what's on your mind today?" Angel asked smiling as Alexis fiddled with her fingers for a couple of seconds. "I kept switching during Lunch today…Molly started yelling at Jenna and I couldn't take it anymore so I yelled back at them" she whispered still fiddling with her fingers. "S-so sorry if I scared you" Alexis looked over at me. "It's f-fine" I said smiling.

Several times during therapy session, Angel had to tell one girl, Olivia to sit still. "Do you want me to tell everyone about your day Olivia?" Angel asked. Olivia let out a squeal and Angel smiled. "Olivia and I walked around the garden today, the flowers that we planted are starting to come up nicely, after that we sat under a tree and Olivia drew some pictures" Angel told us. I've read somewhere that kids with server autism had to be sent to mental hospitals cause nobody could handle them.

We talked for what seemed to be hours before Mrs. Avali came to get Abby and I. "How about going out to the garden for a little while?" Mrs. Avali asked smiling as we walked towards the back walls towards the doors. Once outside Mrs. Avali sat on the bench watching Abby take care of her flower. I sat beside the nurse. "Why do you pick us up from everywhere?" I asked playing with patches. "Each patient has a escort to take them everywhere" She spoke softly, leaning back and breathing deeply, breathing in the air and smiling. "But there must be a lot of patients" I frowned, trying to figure out how many nurse's they'll have to be. Mrs. Avali laughed. "No dear, there's actually only about 50 patents…There's about 25 nurses here" She smiled. "I heard you don't really talk much, do you?" She picked up a flower and spun it between her fingers, watching the petals twirl around. "I don't belong here...I'm not crazy" I whispered. 'It will be alright dear" she spoke softly and patted my hand. We sat in silence for the rest of our remanded. She didn't say she didn't believe….but at the same time, she didn't say she did believe me. I was left to my own thoughts staring at the brick wall that blocked us from the outside world.

Later that night I lay in bed looking at the ceiling silently, it was lights out a few hours ago, but this new place made it hard for me to fall asleep, I glanced through the darkness over at the motionless lump in the next bed. Abby was whimpering silently in bed sleep, curling into a tighter little ball. "What happened to you...?" I thought quietly then turned over, holding Patches closer to me.
